Musical Director - Bevan Messenger

Bevan Messenger studied Trombone at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and later at Indiana University School of Music in the USA where he studied with Lewis van Haney, as the recipient of an Australia Council Scholarship. He also holds a Graduate Diploma in Education from the Queensland University of Technology.
Bevan has held positions as Trombonist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, and the State Orchestra of Victoria, and has also performed on numerous occasions with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra.
Since 1989 Bevan has taught brass instruments and conducted highly successful ensembles in various state and private schools in Brisbane. Highlights have included participating in the Banff International Youth Music Festival in Canada in 1999, and conducting prize winning CD recordings with the Coorparoo Secondary College Concert Band. Presently he is Director of Brass and Percussion at Brisbane Boys’ College where he conducts the College Symphonic Band and the Middle School Concert Band. In 2007 BBC hosted the inaugural Bonyi International Youth Music Festival involving student ensembles and outstanding faculty from across the world.
Bevan is a past secretary of the Australian Trombone Association and, past state president of the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors Association (ABODA).
For many years he has been involved as adjudicator, tutor and conductor for various community groups, festivals and camps including a 30 year involvement with the Queensland Youth Orchestra where he has tutored brass sections for the three Symphony Orchestras and two Wind Bands on a regular basis.
